In this recipe you do not need to fry the prawns. I in general make a paste of coconut paste, mustard paste, plain curd along with mustard oil and green chilies to marinade prawns followed by steaming the prawns for few minutes. To make Bhapa Chingri, you can use a pressure cooker to steam the prawns. It gave me immense pleasure to see her relish the dish with rice.

- Prepare Bhapa chingri
- Make ready 10 pieces Cleaned prawns -
- Get 2 Tbsp Mustard seeds(black / yellow)-
- Get 5 Tbsp Grated coconut -
- Prepare 1 Tbsp Turmeric powder-
- Take 3 Green chillies-
- Take 3 Tbsp Curd -
- Prepare 4 -5 cups Water - medium
- Take as required Salt -
- Take 2 tbsp Mustard oil-
- Get Rice
- Make ready 1/2 cup or as required Regular rice/ Basmati rice-
- Get 3-5 cups Water -
- Get 1 tsp Lemon juice-
You can steam the prawns in a stainless steel utensil inside boiling water. Bhapa Chingri pairs well with steamed rice. Bhapa which means steaming in Bengali & Chingri means prawn. Bhapa which means steaming in Bengali & Chingri means prawn.
Steps to make Bhapa Chingri with steamed rice(Steamed prawns):
- Soak the mustard seeds overnight in water.
- Next day, when you have to make, strain the mustard seeds & grind it along with grated coconut, 2 green chillies, 1Tbsp turmeric powder, salt as required, 1Tbsp mustard oil, add half cup water & make a smooth paste.
- This paste is the magic of our dish…it will look like
- Now take utensil/ plate in which you will steam the prawns. Now mix 3Tbsp curd in this paste….you will see the colour of our mix is a bit light now
- Add the cleaned prawns in this paste & mix properly…so that our prawns are well coated with the paste.
- Prepare the steamer / utensil in which you will steam cook the prawns. Pour 4-5 cups water & let it come to a boil, then place the plate / container with prawn mix onto it.
- Drizzle 1tbsp of mustard oil & chopped green chillies on the top & steam the prawns for 25-30 minutes on low- medium flame.
- We are not going to keep our Bhapa chingri alone.so let's make what goes very well with it!
- Clean, wash half cup (or as required) rice,and add water(double the quantity of rice). Here I am adding 2 cups of water, add 1tsp lemon juice & let it cook for 15-20 minutes.
- Check the prawns after 25 minutes…it should be orange-whitish in colour…if not then cook for 15 more minutes.
- Serve it hot with steamed rice & enjoy the richness of healthy ingredients cooked in an healthy way!
- If time is less…then just soak the mustard seeds for 15 min in hot water & you are good to go! Enjoy making Bhapa Chingri..And have a meal!
